GRANDA
When Robert meets his Samoan Granda in Aotearoa for the first time he approaches him with caution. Granda cannot speak English and Robert cannot speak Samoan. As the day progresses he observes minor actions and reactions from and toward his Granda which encourage him to let down his guard. A strong bond between Granda and grandson is inevitable.
A “traditional” Samoan man, visits his “modern” daughter, Sofia, and young grandson, Robert, in Aotearoa for the first time. For Robert it is the first time he will meet his Granda. Granda cannot speak English and Robert cannot speak Samoan. Robert finds Granda’s style of dress, physical features and speech unfamiliar and he approaches his Granda and fa’aSamoa defensively and cautiously.
While Granda’s life back home is steeped in fa’aSamoa he is aware of the different upbringing his grandson has had. He understands that many New Zealand born Samoans move between two worlds; the West and fa’aSamoa. As a result he responds with patience and understanding.
As the day progresses Robert observes minor actions and reactions from and toward his Granda. Some come from those Robert is familiar with while others come from the most unexpected people. These eventually encourage Robert to lower down his guard.
His Granda’s visit has sparked a desire to explore his culture and before the end of the day Robert subtly reveals that he is open to embracing his Samoan culture. A strong bond between Granda and grandson is inevitable.
